This project was the outcome of an ongoing quest in order to achieve non-trivial complexity. It is the result of a series of experiments, both technical and conceptual. This lead to the creation of an application that runs on a tablet device, which serves as the host for an artificial life-form. An environment is generated by the use of the devices’ camera in which the society of simple organisms lives, breeds, interacts and dies. Any organism is looking for patterns of “colours” in the environment, in order to feed itself. This way it will grow, becoming an adult and produce offspring. The use of nature-inspired algorithms causes unexpected patterns to arise. The offsprings virtual DNA, which holds the characteristics and aesthetics of the organism, is based upon that of its parents. When two organisms have achieved adulthood, are well fed and share some characteristics, they will try to mate. The slicing of this DNA is achieved by using a cellular automata inspired technique. One of the parameters of this algorithm is influenced by the environment in which the impregnation takes place. This way, the environment has a very direct influence on the evolution of the organisms over time.
